The Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu is one of the first famous gamblers in the entire world. He was addicted to gambling may be as a result of the scandalous private life he had. History has it that this flamboyant Earl sat and played at a gambling table for over 24 hours in 1762, refusing to be distracted even for a little time to have his meal. His servants were naturally worried and one of them offered him salted beef which he had just prepared. The Early still not wanting to be distracted while he ate, asked the servant to be the salted beef inside two slices of bread so that he could eat with one hand while still continuing to gamble with the other. It was widely reported that the name Sandwich was derived from that singular incident and that sort of food had been called the name till date.
Another of the West’s most famous gamer and gambler was the ‘Doc’ Holiday who didn’t just had a fierce reputation as an addict drinker but was also a ruthless killer and a tough fighter. Whenever his story is told, Wyatt Earp is mentioned because of the incident at the O.K. Corral, where the famous gunfight took place.
There is also a famous American Legend who led a very violent lifestyle and is easily remembered for many ugly tales surrounding his life. His name is ‘Will Bill’ Hickok who is also mostly remembered by the manner at which he tamed two of the most lawless towns in Kansas at that time. The ironical part of his story was that after creating enormous enmity with many people, his days of judgment came on the poker gaming table. It was reported that he was shot by an assassin while he was busy gambling and was having a pair of eights and a pair of aces on his hands till he gave up the ghost. This is why a pair of aces and a pair of eights are now known as the ‘Dead man’s’ hand in the blackjack game.
In 1904, a conman and bootlegger named Benny Binion was born. He turned around when he was about 43 years and stopped all forms of crimes only to move to Las Vegas and opened a casino hall. His casino grew in popularity and in the early 1970, he bought and massively publicized World Series of Poker Tournament which is now the most popular tournament in the world of blackjack games.
Kerry Packer was quite rich because he came from a family that has over 60 % of all magazines that were published in Australia. He stirred the entire gambling industry when he staked highly and won $26 million at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He isn’t known for that alone because he had always been a high-starker and was also reputed to have lost over $16 million at the Crocksfords Casino in London. This was a monumental loss but it didn’t scratch his over $7.9 Billion wealth.
